New Municipal Centre for Paphos

By Bejay Browne.

A new municipality muti purpose centre will be constructed at Vasileos Constantinou Street in Paphos and comes with a price tag of 3,665,200,00 euros. It will offer social and cultural activities, as well as care for infants and young children, a spokeswoman for Paphos municipality told the Paphos Post.

“This is a great development for Paphos and much needed. Other municipalities have similar centres and this will be good for the people here. The municipality has upgraded the squares and other areas and offered cultural events to the people and now this centre is a very good infrastructure that is much needed,” she said.

The building will be created over three floors, the top one will be used as a day centre for elderly people and have a separate entrance. There is currently an elderly centre in Paphos which is housed in an old building, this will be transferred to the new site.

Older residents of Paphos will be able to enjoy all sorts of activities including, dancing, painting singing and crafting. They will also be able to buy lunch at only 3 euros.

The further two floors will be used as a children’s centre which will offer child care for infants from 4 months old and up to pre-school age.

“We saw a need to help mums after their maternity leave has finished and they need to go back to work. Its difficult to find someone to take care of their babies,” she said.

Costs to parents for this service have yet to be decided.

There will also be an afternoon centre, useful for working parents, where they may bring their children after school in the afternoon. Children will be able to eat at the centre and do their homework.

Priority will be given to families with certain criteria and this will include children of low income families and single parents, she noted.

The centre will have around fifty spaces for children in the afternoons, thirty three places for infants, fifty or so for pre school age and no number restrictions for those attending the elderly centre, she said.

The construction of the new building will get underway soon and it is due to be completed in around fifteen to eighteen months.
