Ties between the municipality of Paphos and the High Commissioner of India in Cyprus were further strengthened at a meeting between the local mayor and the new High Commissioner in the town.
Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos met and discussed issues with Her Excellency Ms. Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat, High Commissioner, at Paphos town hall.
On the occasion of taking over her duties, Ms Bhagat visited Paphos and informed the mayor about the activities of the High Commission in the fields of development, tourism and culture.
The pair agreed to work together to promote bilateral relations in a specific and effective way, expanding the already close cooperation that municipality of Paphos and High Commission of India have developed in recent years.
According to the High Commission, relations between India and Cyprus have been traditionally very close and friendly.
They note that Ms. Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat is a career diplomat and joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1999. She was educated in New Delhi and graduated in Political Science(Honours) and followed it with an LLB.
She has held a number of positions and began her diplomatic career in the Embassy of India in Moscow, followed by Kazakhstan. She subsequently served as Under Secretary on deputation in the Ministry of Commerce, New Delhi and as Deputy Secretary in the Public Diplomacy Division, Ministry of External Affairs. She was also the First Secretary in the Embassy of India, Stockholm, for Commercial and Economic, Cultural and Information affairs.
She speaks Russian, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali and Punjabi and is married to Dr. Kanad Bhagat, She has a daughter and a son.
The High Commissioner presented her credentials to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, at Presidential Palace on 5 December 2019 in Nicosia.
