Larger fines for those selling alcohol to minors and a raise in the legal age limit to purchase and consume it has been proposed by two MP’s, concerned over problems Cyprus is experiencing with underage drinkers.
Charalambos Theopemptou and Michalis Georgallas suggested the measures discussed by the House interior committee on Monday. The proposal raises the age limit from 17 to 18, and provides for an increase in fines of up to €3,400, as well as a prison sentence of up to six months, for those selling alcohol to minors.
“There is a big problem regarding the amount of underage students that have easy access to alcohol. It needs to be addressed immediately,” said Georgallas.
In addition, MP George Karoullas noted that the government should implement measures to protect young people from alcohol addiction. He is also in favour of raising the age limit for those eligible to purchase alcohol.
