Fighting Climate Change One Tree At A Time

Paphos Aphrodite Rotary Club.

Hopefully by the time you read this the fierce heat of summer will have lessened, but the need to fight climate change will not lessen.

Cyprus, like all Mediterranean islands, has far fewer trees now than in the past. Trees are a valuable weapon in the climate war. They provide much needed shade and contribute oxygen to the atmosphere. It is for that reason that the ‘Plant a million trees in Cyprus’ project was established. Paphos’ contribution to this is an aim to plant 100,000 trees.

Paphos Aphrodite Rotary Club is fully behind this initiative and, during the year of President Thorsten Quakernack, a major fundraising drive will be devoted to the project. We have already identified sites for planting in Letymbou and Choletria and more will follow.

The cost of a tree, all of them typical Mediterranean species, ranges from €3 to €10 and the planting will be done by members of the club and communities. Agreements with villages and municipalities will ensure the continuing health of the trees.

We are looking for support from everyone to ensure that our contribution can be as great as possible. Contributions of any amount are appreciated and donors can be assured that every cent donated will go directly to buying and planting trees. Additionally, anyone who would like to join a planting session would be warmly welcomed. If you would like to help us follow the links below.

We know that most of us will not see these trees grow to maturity but our descendants will be able to enjoy their shade and their very positive effect on Cyprus.
