An appeal has been launched to raise funds for a Paphos family that has been hit by a string of tragedies over the last few years.
Cafe owner, Yiannis Ioannides, recently died at the age of 47.
Yiannis lived with a number of medical ailments over the years and saw his debts mount.
Recent restrictions implemented to curb the spread of Covid 19 meant he had to shutter his cafe in Paphos old town. Stressed by a lack of income and no way to support his wife or four children, Yiannis, who was in hospital with intestinal issues, suffered a fatal heart attack and stroke, according to a family friend.
“We have set up a bank account with the aim of supporting his four children, providing food and clothes and helping their needs,” Demetris Georgiades, told the Paphos Post.
The four children range in age from 4 to 18 years.
The family’s finances are precarious due to the closure of their café, and substantial debts incurred relating to one of the couples children’s medical needs. A large fire also severely damaged their home.
Eight years ago, Yiannis also experienced problems with his spine and traveled abroad for treatment. Here he developed sepsis, a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s response to an infection damages its own tissue.
“It would be really wonderful if the community could deposit a few euros, which will mean a great deal to this family that have been through so much,” Georgiades said.
