Richard Daly, coordinator and treasurer of Caritas Paphos St.Pauls told the Paphos Post “With so much uncertainty going on around the world one almost feels guilty about happily talking and telling a story of a success, but that is exactly what Caritas Paphos St Paul’s is wanting to share with Paphos Post readers. With turmoil seemingly all-round and prices of basic vegetables rapidly increasing it is perhaps more important to think about developing expertise in growing our own produce, thus leading the way to hopefully self-sufficiency”.
The Agricultural Educational Project, after seemingly weeks of stalling, is at last progressing rapidly. Two weeks ago, the much-needed Poly Tunnel was delivered erected and installed. Over the last week the ground has been completely flattened and a covering put on the base of the Poly tunnel. Over the last weekend mulch and pots have been purchased leading to sowing of plants and seeds. Within just a few days we have growing tomato plants, strawberry plants and other vegetables. Sometime later this week we are hoping to have an irrigation system installed.
In addition, a few Pomegranate trees have been planted alongside the poly tunnel and spring onions along the other side.
Remember all this is organic, bio-diversity development using labour intensive operations for what we hope will be high yielding production.
Planning ahead we need knowledgeable volunteers from around the world to assist us with the cultivation of this extensive plot of land by growing vegetables that may not currently be grown here.
They would be supplied with their own small plot and be given 2/3 Asylum Seekers/Migrants/Refugees helping them. Under their direction our beneficiaries would be gaining and learning from their experience and expertise.
As this project develops our expectations are that we will have enough produce to supply the needy and poor who are registered with us (Caritas Paphos St Paul’s) from our Storeroom in Kato Paphos.
We have been so very blessed to have three substantial donations that has enabled us to purchase much needed equipment and consumables to progress this initiative. More assistance and support is very much needed terms of monetary donations, gardening and farming implements and tools.
