Peyia Resident Drums Up Support For Charity Ride Around The Island

By Bejay Browne.

A 67 year old Peyia resident is drumming up support for an upcoming 600km charity cycle ride around the island and is encouraging individuals and businesses to pledge their cash now.

John Adams is planning to complete the ride over a six day period from November 6 to November 15 (with a two night break in Kyrenia). The aim is to raise as much money as possible for two local charities, Paws dog shelter and the cancer patients support group, Paphos (CPSG).

The event is titled, ‘Cycling Cyprus 4 Cancer and Canines,’ and has a new dedicated Facebook page which will be kept up to date with the latest information.

“My wife and I both like raising money and helping charities and both of these are such good causes. I like to set myself challenges too. I am reasonably fit and have taken up cycling and am currently training every week ahead of this ride,” Adams told the Paphos Post.

The keen cyclist will carry out the challenge with the support of his wife Lou and a number of close friends, who plan to accompany him on the route by car.

Adams is hoping to raise as much money as possible to provide much needed mobile oxygen units, which cost around 750 euros each, for the CPSG and to create an isolation room for puppies at Paws dog shelter.

As well as funds raised from sponsorship of the ride, Adams will also garner money for the charities from two related events, his ‘send off’ coffee morning which will be held at the dog shelter and his welcome home lunch at Gustoso’, with entertainment and a raffle.

“I will set off from the shelter in Achelia on the first leg of my journey and they will host the send off coffee morning from 10am-12pm, when I will then set off on my challenge.”

A fund-raising ‘welcome home’ lunch will be held at Gustoso restaurant at 1.00pm on Friday November 15, the day after the challenge will be completed and entertainment to celebrate will be provided by Melanie Ballard and the B Sharp Choir. Tickets are 15 euros and can be pre-booked.

“I’m just hoping that the weather holds and it doesn’t rain and I can raise as much money as possible,” he said of his upcoming challenge.

Adams added that sponsorship forms are available at Paws charity shop, the dog shelter and the CPSG/ PASYKAF day centre in Paphos.
